Lightness of being

Third in the series of one-man show held at Rossi&Rossi gallery Tsering Nyandak
20 juin 2008

The Rossi & Rossi gallery at 16 Clifford Street, London, is one of the few galleries in Europe where the best of the arts of Asia, both past and present, can be seen. In the past thirty years Rossi & Rossi has established a reputation as a leading dealer in Indian, Tibetan and Himalayan art and early Chinese textiles, as well as publishing a number of scholarly works. Fabio Rossi has travelled extensively in Tibet and China and in recent years has met many young artists whose work shows an exciting fusion of traditional Tibetan culture and contemporary western art. The move last year to a new larger gallery has enabled Rossi & Rossi to give greater prominence to the work of these contemporary Asian artists, particularly Tibetan, and the third in a series of one-man shows will feature the work of Tsering Nyandak, from Thursday 3 July to Friday 1 August 2008.

;

Tsering Nyandak was born in Lhasa in 1974. From 1985 to 1993 he lived and studied in Dharamsala (India). In 1993, after returning to Tibet, he started studying art under Tsewang Tashi. He has participated in various exhibitions in China, Germany and Nepal and is a founding member of the Gedun Choephel Artists’ Guild. For Tsering Nyandak, being an artist is about self-expression and is not culturally stereotypical.

;

He has said “I believe that to be an artist one should find one’s own mode of expression integrated deeply in oneself. So I feel my works though devoid of certain innovation, are genuine and expressive. The artistic environment in Tibet hasn’t yet had the space and scope for innovation that other regions enjoy. But strong individualism has thrived without conscious innovation. Personally the saying ‘perhaps my artwork is no better that yours but at least it’s different’ doesn’t appeal to me much at present stage.

;

”Largely my themes share similarity with other artists in certain treatment. Though not so sociable a person, I am keen at observing social phenomena; subjectively. I can’t say I am critical, political, or any other things. But I should say that I am sensitive and artful in depicting my themes. And that feels like tasting a strange food without commenting about it but bodily expressing something about the taste.”
