The making of Jaxon and Izzy

I am asked very often about how I work. How long does it take? Where do I get my ideas? This newsletter shows you my newest work called “Jaxon and Izzy” and it also shows the sequence of work involved in it’s creation.

First, the idea for painting “Jaxon and Izzy” came when my friend Tom was showing off pictures of his new kittens to me. I saw the photo it is based on and loved it! I asked him if I could paint it then told him how much saying yes cost him. He, he, he…

Step 1 = the idea

;

;

Subjects are everywhere! I am most attracted to angles and light. I often paint pictures based around window frames because I like the angles involved in the frame, the shadows and the contrasts between indoor/outdoor light, as well as the whole concept of indoor objects vs. outdoor objects. I am also interested in the subject of manmade vs. natural objects and design.

;

;

For example, in my painting “topless” you find seashells on a windowsill. I was engrossed by the idea that my landlady chose to put them there and how these natural outdoor objects came to be trapped inside on a windowsill.

;

;

What made me want to paint the work called “Jaxon and Izzy” was:

;

;

-         the high contrast lighting, the use of sunlight in the photo as it hits the dog and the cat’s figures

;

-         the different materials to work with (wood, curtains, sunlight, fur, rope on the dog’s bed)

;

-         the contrast between the dog and cat’s physical size. You can see the dog’s bed is lifted up from the floor in the area the kitten is lying in. This shows you how much less the cat weighs than the dog. My friend told me when the dog got up from the bed it sent the kitten flying in the air from the change in weight balance. That imagery made me laugh a few times while working on the painting of kitty.

;

Step 2 – the size

;

;

I like to work with substantial sized canvases and since 1994 have worked primarily in oil. I also work in egg tempera and watercolour.

;

;

Step 3 – the initial sketching and washes

;

;

;

;

Step 4- introducing contrast

Step 5 – working details

Step 6 – high details

;

;

Step 7 – revisit until satisfied
